From a very young age, children are exposed to basic shapes and primary colors by using single or three-shape knobbed puzzles.
Around age 4, children can explore shapes using the Circles, Squares, and Triangles. The material consists of a set of three compartmentalized wooden boxes with lids. One box contains red shapes, one box contains yellow shapes, and one box contains blue shapes (circles, squares, triangles). Inside each compartment are 10 similar glossy smooth glossy planes that decrease in size from 10 cm to 1 cm.
Upon the first presentation, children are invited to work with one box. The shapes may be aligned from left to right, beginning with the largest shapes. This way, children are already familiar with placing the largest shapes at the bottom when superimposing them to create amazing designs!
Per popular demand, Alison's Montessori has created 27 task cards to accompany the classic Circles, Squares, and Triangles. The set of Task Cards also contains 6 large control charts for children to practice laying the materials out from left to right and from largest to smallest. They can be used especially after children have had sufficient time to do self-exploration and create their own creative designs. The Task Cards include questions, visuals, and controls for errors on the back. They may be used by the guiding adult with a four-year-old child, or independently by a 5-year-old learner.
