Abstract Math Concept

The Trinomial Cube provides the all-important bridge between concrete and abstract thinking. It introduces the abstract math concept to children as young as 4. The early sensorial experience with the cube inspires them again between the age of 8-9 when they use it for algebra.

What it is

The trinomial cube is a wooden box with a cover and two adjacent hinged sides, containing 27 wooden blocks that fit together to form a cube with the same pattern on each side and in the middle. Each face that is “a2" is red, "b2" is blue, and "c2" is yellow and the other faces are black.
The cube has a visual representation of the algebraic formula (a+b+c) (a+b+c) (a+b+c) or (a+b+c)³.

Item Use

Begin removing pieces from the hinged box and set out three layers on the table. Starting with the tallest layer and the red cube (a³), remove the pieces in order and lay them out according to the formula. Do the same with the second layer (selecting the piece with a red face "a²b" first), continuing in the sequence of the formula. Lay pieces of the same size in front of each other. Finally, select the piece with the red face, "a²c", from the third layer and continue until the whole cube shows the formula in the arrangement of pieces on the table. Reconstruct the cube, layer by layer, beginning with "a³", matching faces of the same color. The child will realize in time that the pieces are also matched by size. Most children will need more demonstrations on subsequent days.
